Frequently Asked Questions

I lost my Master Key. Can you reset my account?

Strictly NO. Privacy Bar does not store your Master Key or any of your data on a server. There is no database to query and no "Forgot Password" function. Your Master Key is the only key; if it is lost, your data is mathematically unrecoverable.

There is one clue, however. As soon as you finish typing the Master Key, a mnemonic Hashili word based on the Master Key appears right below it. You may not remember it exactly, but you'll recognize it when the right one appears.

Everything is very slow. Why?

Most likely, your Master Key is weak. Privacy Bar compensates for weak keys by adding extra computation. This is also true for Shared Keys and every other password supplied by the user.

The solution is to make a Master Key that is both strong (get the colored bar below it into the green) and memorable. Take your time doing this; it's worth it.

Can I change my Master Key?

Sure you can. Just type in a new one, and it's done. But using always the same Master Key will help to keep it fresh in your memory.

When you change your Master Key, all synthesized passwords will change, as well as your public Lock. Make sure you warn recipients that your Lock has changed. Also, saved passwords and page notes will no longer be decryptable and will need to be deleted.

Can I use different computers?

Of course! Data such as password serial and length, other users' Locks, and UI preferences (NOT your Master Key) are synced across computers when you log with the same Chrome account and allow sync.

This won't work for mobile devices, however, because they don't support browser extensions, so far. This is why I have developed the mobile app.

Does the Mobile App produce the same passwords as the extension?

Yes. The generation is deterministic. If you enter the same Master Key, Host, and Serial into the Mobile App, the mathematical result will be identical to your desktop extension.

Why is my email visible in the "Pro" status box?

Privacy Bar uses "Social DRM." Your Pro License is cryptographically signed using the name and email provided at checkout. This allows the extension to verify your license state locally without pinging a central server, ensuring your privacy remains intact while discouraging unauthorized distribution.

If I use several email addresses, do I need several Pro accounts?

No. You use one email address to purchase and receive your unlock code, but that has nothing to do with the email addresses you use in the app. Each page can have a different one, if you like, or none at all. Once Pro level is unlocked, it remains unlocked even if you change your email address.

Is my data shared with any third parties?

Never. Your data--including your notes, passwords, and keys—-stays strictly within your browser's sync storage. We do not use trackers, analytics, or external cloud syncing.

Will you send me newsletters or marketing emails?

Never. We find newsletters as annoying as you do. Privacy Bar has no marketing database and no mailing list. Your email is only used if you purchase a Pro license (to sign the license key locally and then send it to you) or if you submit a bug report and we need to clarify a technical detail. You'll never have anything to "unsubscribe" from.
